A BRIEF HISTORY TURKISH RAILWAYS
The first railway line in Turkey was constructed between Izmir and Aydin,
by a British company in 1856 and the construction of the 130 km line
was completed in 1866.
The Izmir(Kasaba) - Turgutlu - Afyon line and 98 km. of the Manisa -
Bandirma line were constructed by another British company and put into
service in 1865. The remaining section of the Manisa-Bandirma line was
constructed in the subsequent years. Construction of the 2000 km. Orient
Railways was granted to Baron Hirsch in 1869. Istanbul-Edirne and Kirklareli-Alpullu
lines totalling 336 km within national borders linked Istanbul to Europe.
Following an Imperial Rescript in 1871, construction of 91 km Haydarpasa
- Izmit line was completed in 1873 by state construction. Howewer ,
due to financial difficulties constructiun of Anatolian Railways as
well as Baghdat and Southern Railways were financed by German capital.
When Turkish Republic was declared in 29.10.1923 approximately 4000
km. of the lines built and operated by various foreign companies existed
within the national borders of the New State. These lines were nationalized
by Act :506 passed on 24.05.1924 and General Directorate of Anatolian-Baghdat
Railways was established. With the Act No : 1042 passed on 31.05.1927
the name was changed to General Administration of State Railways and
Ports .
The administration functioning as a Public Enterprise with a supplementary
budget until 29.07.1953 was converted to a Public Economic Corporation
under the name General Directotare of Turkish State Railways (TCDD)
by Act No : 6186.The Goverment Decree in Power of Law No : 233 it was
changed into a Public Economic Enterprise .
